ROCKLIFFE SERIES recommended by Hilary Rose of THE TIMES

Reluctantly, the Duke of Rockliffe is in the market for a wife. His requirements are simple; a lady who will occupy her position with well-bred grace and chaperone his sister, Nell – but who will not bore him to distraction.
Whilst accompanying Nell to what he speedily comes to regard as the house-party from hell, he meets Adeline Kendrick - acid-tongued and by no means beautiful, yet somehow alluring. Worse still, her relatives are quite deplorable - from Cousin Diana, a spoiled and ill-natured beauty, to manipulative and sadistic Uncle Richard. As a prospective bride, therefore, Adeline is out of the question. Until, that is, a bizarre turn of events cause the Duke to do the unthinkable and make what the Polite World will call a mésalliance.

The Mésalliance Rockliffe Book 2 edition by Stella Riley Romance eBooks

I'll begin by saying this story had the maximum amount of potential. With a character like the Duke of Rockliffe who was so intriguing in The Parfit Knight (Rockliffe Book 1), our unusual heroine, Adeline Kendrick, and a writer with the skills of Ms. Riley, I was so looking forward to reading this book.

Although the first one-third of the book was superb where we have the suave, handsome, dry wit, Rockliffe, attending a house party with his younger sister, Nell, when lo and behold... he meets an acquaintance from his past and she's all grown up. Adeline Kendrick is no longer the little fairy like teen-ager who ran over hill and dale interacting with heirs to dukedoms and feeding small woodland creatures without her shoes. No, she's the "poor" cousin who is basically a servant to the horrible family who is hosting the house party.

It's obvious Adeline's former life was ripped out from under her feet - she's barely allowed out of the house, lest she revert back to the little gypsy of her youth. But, she has not gone into this role with her head tucked down - no, indeed - she's all sharp edges and can give as good as she gets - mostly. However, there have obviously been times in her life when the brutality of her Uncle Richard, who was used by the family to keep her in line, has unfortunately had its effect upon her. Still, she has fight left in her soul and nobody - not even the quick witted, put 'em in your place Rockcliffe - can best her when she gets going.

Nevertheless, when Rockcliffe sees the grown-up Adeline, he's more fascinated by her than ever, even though she's obviously beneath him socially - she's too outspoken, and she's not considered beautiful but rather plain. To make a somewhat earthy play on words - beneath him is exactly where Rockcliffe wants Adeline - he can't get her out of his mind. In fact, when events transpire to put them together and he's asked by his best friend, Amberley, what the deal is - Rockcliffe can't really explain except to say that he just "really wanted" her. Desire? Definitely! Love? Not sure.

**Spoilerish**

Due to Adeline's hateful cousin Diana's manipulation, Rockliffe and Adeline find themselves "compromised" - not that they had done anything wrong, but in those days appearances were everything. I laugh here because Rockliffe doesn't give a rip about being compromised - he'll marry the girl much to everyone in the world's surprise. He takes her out of the arms of her awful family and totes her to London where she is given the royal treatment - lovely gowns, unbelievable jewelry - he even takes her to one of his country estates so he can teach her how to dance and hone her skills so she won't feel "less than" when she must enter Society as his duchess.

But, here's where the storyline began to fall into the pit for me. Although Rockliffe wanted her with his heart and soul - making attempt after attempt to get her to warm up and giving her weeks and months to become accustomed to him - still, Adeline's feelings of unworthiness and later a blackmail situation with old Uncle Richard contrive to scare her witless due to her concerns that the truth of her origins might harm Rockliffe's standing in Society. This resulted in Adeline backing off, withdrawing and being totally unable to show her true feelings toward Rockcliffe, nor accepting his for her. Worse yet, she loses the best part of her personality. The Adeline we met at the house party would never have taken this blackmail situation sitting down.

Eventually, her lack of trust and openness with Rockcliffe takes a toll on their marriage. And, of course, there ain't nobody gonna go out on a limb and say the "love" word. This type of stuff I can take, but not for the entire last half of the book with the resolution coming only at around the 95% spot in the book after they had been married for at least five or six months and he had given her every chance in the world to trust him. No, Adeline hung on tightly to her worries, although she was willing to share them with Rockliffe's friends, which was not at all the thing to do. Heaven forbid!

Too. Little. Too. Late. What a waste - Rockcliffe deserved such a better story. Actually, I began to believe their whole marriage was indeed a mésalliance. When the "good" part finally happened, I just didn't feel it. Yes, I'm gonna read the next book in the series The Player (Rockliffe Book 3) - I got a glimpse of that actor in France and I can't wait to find out what that's all about - I assume he is "The Player."

The Mésalliance Rockliffe Book 2 edition by Stella Riley Romance eBooks Reviews

Stella Riley is a non-pareil , and I have loved her Rockliffe Series. I am absolutely certain I have reviewed The Mesalliance previously; I am not sure why it has disappeared.

I have just re-read it, and was enthusiastic to amend my rating [thus discovering the review is no longer visible!!]. While I must agree with others' complaints about the misunderstanding that goes on for just a tad too long, I would not let it put you off reading this absorbing story.

I am a huge lover of character-driven tales, and this is one worth reading and re-reading. We get to really know Rockliffe due to Riley's marvellous talent, and when things resolve as the book comes to a close, one would have to have a heart of granite to not be bowled over by Rock's vulnerability and the sweet resolution of this interesting couple's story.

Plenty of details in other reviews, so I won't repeat them here. But if you're new to Riley, I envy you the exquisite pleasure of your first read!! Start at the beginning with The Parfit Knight; it still remains my favorite of the five books in the series. But these are books you'll want to read and re-read, as the characters become friends, and their stories delight you without fail.

Highly recommended!
A soft three. They're married 5 months and still have not done the hokey pokey. He's thirtysomething. She's twentysomethings. They're youmg, healthy, attracted to each other even eventually in love. However they dont hit the mattress until the 98% point of the book. Yawn. After which they have mind blowing sex. Good for them.

Of course they did have problems. Big misunderstandings. Little misunderstandings. Big lies. Little lies. There was a big cast of characters and it seemed everyone was lying to someone. Or mad at someone. Or in love with someone. Or in love and mad and lying to someone. This story dragged for me but then I'm not a fan of the big M.
Stella Riley writes historical romances set in the Georgian period. Her writing is good with attention to details. I liked the Parfit Knight quite a bit (which has a BIG SECRET that drives the plot) and is more in the line of the traditional HR. Overall, I don’t like this one as much because of the BIG MISUNDERSTANDING that drags through the last 50% of the book. Somehow the big misunderstanding in this books seems a lot more contrived and trivial to overcome than that in the Parfit Knight. The character of the heroine in the first part is incongruent with that in the second half. She allows herself to be blackmailed by her malicious, unscrupulous uncle for a detail of her origins that was not verified. It seems like she has no plan with what she was going to do long term. The thing just escalates and she gets herself more and more in a quagmire and her response is to be nastier and nastier to the hero, her husband. Along with the heroine's stupidity, the hero has already found out what she's hiding but doesn't confront the heroine. Georgette Heyer also relies on the BIG MISUNDERSTANDING trope but she does it much better, with more humor and charm. The hero's character is better drawn and imminently more attractive than that of the heroine's. There’s also a secondary and a tertiary romance. The side plot with the hero’s sister, her romance and willfulness doesn't add too much, except to the deceit the heroine keeps heaping on. It got tiresome and I just wanted to finish the book. This one is less of a traditional HR because of the added graphic love scene at the end.
There's also something weird about the version. Towards the last few pages, many paragraphs were highlighted in yellow that can't be deleted. Annoying.
